What is Bowen Therapy?

The Bowen Technique is a very gentle form of natural healing. In order to appreciate its subtlety and depth, the therapy really needs to be experienced. The Bowen Technique embodies a truly holistic approach to healthcare. It is concerned not just with addressing specific conditions and symptoms, but also with encouraging a natural potential for health to express itself in every aspect of the patient's life.

A Bowen practitioner applies light, rolling moves over specific areas on the body, not necessarily at the point of pain or tension, and then allows the body to release tension patterns in varying areas, using its own self-healing processes.

A unique feature of the Bowen Technique is the pause between each series of moves. This is given to allow the body to respond and integrate what is being done. The pauses may vary in duration depending on the circumstances that are presented.

The main purpose is to find the origin of the problem and not merely treat the symptoms. It serves to heal injuries, imbalances and calm the nervous system.

Tom Bowen, thank you doesn't seem enough. You left behind an amazing therapy I use daily to help people struggling with pain.

Mind Body Bowen

Realised by Anne Schubert in correlation with Margaret Spicer, they discovered a pattern that after certain Bowen moves the client would sense reactions, which guided them to look closer at the body's muscle/meridians correlation. They found using the Bowen moves as a means of connecting the sensations to the meridians, it guided them to work in an area of the body which would other wise be discounted as being at the root of the ailment.

Each meridian is linked to particular indicator muscle and the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of our being.

Exploring the emotional element associated with disruptions of the body, it is believed that when we have experienced trauma, these memories are stored in areas of our body that have been ‘shut off’ causing pain, numbness, tingling, or tension.

Mind Body Bowen connects the sensations with the Bowen moves to the stories, allowing the body to bring the subconscious to the conscious mind and unlock repressed emotion and trauma. When we release these emotions we heal the associated pain and muscle tension.

“Bowen is a complementary therapy that supports mind, body, and spirit through physical, mental, and psychological pathways.” - Olafimihan and Hall
